How to Get a Spam-Free Email InboxI recently read an article about stopping email spam where the writer said: "You can’t completely get rid of spam because the professional spammers have all the tools". This isn't true. You can stop 100% of spam and keep your inbox spam-free. Read on to find out how... Stopping Email SpamDespite all the precautions you may have taken, it's very likely you've received email spam in the past. I'd hazard a guess to say that you probably get spam email messages pretty regularly now. Am I right? My personal email addresses attract an average at least 100 spam emails a day and some days in the past I have had up to 10,000 junk messages in just 24 hours. But not a single dodgy message makes it to my inbox because I use what is known as a "whitelisting" service. This is a service that is designed to only allow email through if it is from a legitimate source - someone who has proved that they exist. For example:Let's pretend my sister emails me but she has a new email address and it isn't already specified as 'safe'. Her email message goes into an "Unverified" folder. The system then emails her back. She receives an email automatically which basically says "Please confirm that you are a human being and not some dodgy spam software". It asks her to click on a link and input a short code. When she does this successfully she is added to the safelist and the email is moved to my inbox. Any future email from her new email address will automatically go through to my inbox as it has been verified as 'real'. Contrast this with a spam message:Spammer "Bill" sends me some junk email about some so-called miraculous pills (you can imagine what kind of "products" I mean!). He fakes his email address to try and avoid the various spam filters that some email companies put in place. My whitelisting service receives the email and, as the sender is not a known 'safe' sender, the email is placed in the 'Unverified' folder. The system sends an email to "Bill" but because he is not using a real email address he does not receive the message. So he cannot click the link and cannot input the code. In short, he cannot verify that his email is legitimate. His email remains in the "Unverified" folder and is automatically deleted after 7 days. This spam email never makes it to my inbox because "Bill" the spammer cannot verify to the system that he is a legitimate sender. As spam emailers never use real email addresses they can never verify their emails as legitimate so my inbox remains completely clear of all junk. This image shows how much junk email my whitelisting service has stopped since I started using it in October 2006: It has processed a total of 735,538 emails and found that only 10,108 were 'real' emails. The whitelisting service I use to keep my inbox clean is called SpamArrest.
